Professional Medical Coder

The Medical Coder is responsible for accurately coding medical records and insurance claims. The Medical Coder will ensure accuracy in coding, while maintaining compliance with federal and state regulations and coding guidelines. This position requires excellent organizational and analytical skills.

Responsibilities:

• Review medical records and assign accurate procedure and diagnosis codes using ICD-10 and CPT-4 coding systems.

• Analyze clinical documentation and obtain additional information as needed to ensure accurate coding.

• Verify accuracy of coded data for billing purposes.

• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding guidelines and requirements.

• Respond to coding questions from healthcare providers and staff.

• Assist in resolving coding issues and discrepancies.

• Prepare reports and other documents as needed.

• Participate in training and educational opportunities as needed.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

• Associate’s degree in Medical Coding or related field.

• Certification as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).

Certification

After completing this program students will be prepared to sit for the AAPC's Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam. A CPC must have at least two years medical coding experience (member's with an apprentice designation are not required to have two years medical coding experience.) Membership is required to be renewed annually and 36 Continuing Education Units (CEU's) must be submitted every two years for verification and authentication of expertise. Due to the level of expertise required of medical coders, AAPC expects certified coders to be able to perform not only in an exam setting but also in the real world. In addition to passing the certification exam, coders will also be required to demonstrate on-the-job coding experience. Those who pass the CPC exam but have not yet met this requirement will be designated as an Apprentice (CPC-A) on their certificate.
CPC-A Status: Members with an Apprentice designation are still required to submit annual CEUs while completing the coding job requirement.
